My final for
Sam Nielson's digital painting class.
In retrospect, floating islands aren't such a novelty.
Castle in the Sky and everything before and after, especially in Japan, has them. Even the
Ducktales movie has them. I'm finally admitting to myself that they're not as cool and unique as I've long believed.
Also there are painting problems with the falling hero. He really got the least amount of love in this painting, which is unfortunate, since it's about him losing. And although I'm happy with the composition, I fudged a lot of perspective rules to make it work, like with the villain's figure, and the ledges he's standing on, and the larger islands (of which we only see the bottom halves) in the middle ground.
In the end, I learned
a lot about color, light, and process.
